Maia and Alex Shibutani started ice dancing in 2004 and are each other’s first and only partner. The siblings train at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs with Patti Gottwein. Maia and Alex had their first international assignment at the North American Challenge Skate comp etition in Vancouver, Canada, where they won the silver medal. They won the gold at the 2007 Midwestern Sectional Championships.

The Shibutani's won the silver medal at the 2005 US Junior Nationals at the juvenile level and the gold at the intermediate level in 2006.
