The second phase of the senior ice dancing competition got underway on late Thursday afternoon with the original dance. None of the top six original dance performances received a single negative GOE. In fact, it was just the opposite.
Meryl Davis & Charlie White increased their lead with an energetic performance to "Happy Feet." The one +3 and 28 +2 GOEs, though their levels were a mix of 3s and 4s.
"Technically, it wasn't our best, but we are looking forward to Saturday," Davis said.
Second-place finishers, Emily Samuelson & Evan Bates, had to take a breather after the wrong music was started for their program. A few moments later, Samuelson & Bates charged ahead presenting a fun and flirty performance to Irving Berlin's "Let Yourself Go." The team received level 4s on all of their elements except for their step sequences.
"Overall, it felt like a strong performance," Samuelson said. "We wanted to present the program the best that we could, and we wanted to portray the characters of the '20s, '30s, and '40s the best we could, and I think we did that."
Kimberly Navarro & Brent Bommentre finished sixth in the original dance, but remained in third place by virtue of their compulsory dance score. Their program to "Hey Pachuco" was an audience favorite.
"I think we were really happy with how we skated tonight," Navarro said. "We lost a lot of points technically, but that was not our focus tonight. We were focused on the performance."
"I thought the crowd was really great here in Cleveland, and I felt that our performance went over really well with them," Bommentre said.
Siblings Madison & Keiffer Hubbell finished fourth in the original dance and remained in fourth overall with a sultry performance to "Minnie the Moocher." The 2009 Junior Grand Prix silver medalists received only four base mark GOEs with the remaining +1 or +2.
In fifth place in the original dance and overall, Jane Summersett & Todd Gilles performed to music from "Funny Face." The team's straightline lift was level 4 and received one +3 GOE, in addition to four +2s and four +1s. The team feels that the performance was not as strong as they would like.
"It was ok," Gilles said.
"We need to skate better, it wasn't enough," Summersett added.
Pulling up to sixth place due to their third place original dance are Morgan Matthews & Leif Gislason who were pleased with their performance.
"We want to be the best," Gislason said. "There's a learning curve, and we get better every day. The key for us is just to do our absolute best."
The team also wanted to put dispel any recent rumors about them parting ways.
"There was a lot of stuff going on at the rink about us having a riff," Matthews said. "There is no truth to that. If anyone looks at the track record of our past year and a half, they'd know there's no truth to that."
The event concludes with the free dance on Saturday.
