Charles started skating at the age of 4, but didn't start training until age 7. At age 6, his family moved from his birthplace in Bryn Mawr, PA to Texas. 

He began ice dancing at age 10 with Canadian Julie Holmes as his first coach. Charles competed four times at Junior Nationals and made the trip to Nationals three times. His fourth place finish in January 2006 was Charles' second national medal, following a silver in the 2005 Novice competition.

In 2005, Charles was accepted to Columbia University in the City of New York and he will graduate as a member of the Class of 2010. Charles graduated in June 2005 from Watkinson School in Hartford, CT, as his class valedictorian.
