A freak accident in practice earlier this week has sidelined 2010 U.S. Olympians, Emily
Samuelson & Evan Bates. The Michigan duo was on the ice and training for the upcoming
season when, during a lift, Samuelson\u2019s blade severed Bates\u2019 Achilles tendon. Bates
successfully underwent a 90-minute surgery on Thursday and the estimated recovery time is six
months, effectively putting them out for the competitive season. This will be the first extended
break from the ice for Bates since he started in the sport 14 years ago. Bates will begin his
recovery at home in Ann Arbor, as he must keep his leg over his head for at least two weeks to
ensure the most successful result.<\/p>\n
On Friday, the team withdrew from the I.S.U. Grand Prix series and will make an official
statement about January\u2019s U.S. National Championships at a later date. During Bates\u2019 recovery,
Samuelson will continue skating. Although the injury is a setback, the team is looking forward to
returning to the ice as a team for years to come.<\/p>\n
In lieu of gifts, Samuelson & Bates have suggested that their fans and supporters can donate
