{"id":25837,"date":"2020-10-22T21:37:17","date_gmt":"2020-10-23T01:37:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/?p=25837"},"modified":"2020-10-22T21:37:17","modified_gmt":"2020-10-23T01:37:17","slug":"idi-to-debut-free-online-event-titled-touching-the-human-spirit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/idi-to-debut-free-online-event-titled-touching-the-human-spirit\/","title":{"rendered":"IDI to debut free online event, titled Touching the Human Spirit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Photo by David J ,Murray<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After its six-week national tour was cut short by COVID-19 shutdowns earlier this year, Maine-based Ice Dance International (IDI) returns with an hour-long online event, <em>Touching the Human Spirit<\/em>, featuring appearances by legendary dance and skating stars, as well as IDI\u2019s current roster of Olympic competitors and national champions performing brand new choreography, as well as highlights from the 2020 tour.<\/p>\n<p><em>Touching the Human Spirit<\/em>, which premieres free October 28 on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icedanceinternational.org\/\">icedanceinternational.org<\/a>, recounts IDI\u2019s history and activities across the country, and gives viewers a chance to support the non-profit company\u2019s return to the road in 2021. The show includes a mix of new, archive and composite performances from IDI\u2019s travels across the country over the past several years.<\/p>\n<p>Edited by Seacoast local photographer, David J. Murray; Touching the Human Spirit includes local IDI history and a special segment about IDI\u2019s relationships here on the Seacoast including being the company in residence at Strawbery Banke Museum.<\/p>\n<p>Award-winning skating champions appearing in this event include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Olympic Gold Medalist Dorothy Hamill (from Vail, Colo.);<\/li>\n<li>Olympian, National Champion, and World Medalist in pairs JoJo Starbuck (Madison, NJ); and<\/li>\n<li>Four-time World Champion, Canadian National Champion, and legendary choreographer Kurt Browning (Toronto);<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Touching the Human Spirit<\/em> performers include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2016 U.S. Open Grand Champion ice skater, award-winning choreographer and IDI principal performer Rohene Ward (Chicago, Ill.). Ward\u2019s \u201cTill the End,\u201d which IDI commissioned for its 2020 tour, will be presented in a new performance filmed last week in Chicago;<\/li>\n<li>Grand Prix Final Champion, two-time Skate Canada Champion and two-time U.S. National Champion Alissa Czisny (Detroit, Mich.);<\/li>\n<li>Five-time U.S. National competitor and ISU Junior Grand Prix competitor Kseniya Ponomaryova (Chicago, Ill.); and<\/li>\n<li>S. Figure Skating Championships Silver Medalist, Junior World competitor, and former Team USA Ice Dancer Collin Brubaker (Chicago, Ill.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Special guests include legendary ballet dancer and choreographer Edward Villella his wife Linda Villella (New York City, NY). Mr. Villella\u2019s piece for IDI, \u201cThe Three Smokers,\u201d will be shown in a compilation of performances from across the country. Choreographer Cindy Stuart talks about the World Premiere of her new work, \u201cExperience,\u201d commissioned for IDI by Joe Kasputys (in memory of Marilyn Kasputys) and performed just once at Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center in Stowe, Vt., in the days before the shutdown. The Kasputys\u2019s daughter Joy Prudek, an IDI board member, will introduce the world premiere.<\/p>\n<p>Additional performances on the special include Benoit Richaud\u2019s \u201cReflections,\u201d skated by IDI principals Carly Donowick and Erin Reed. This piece was filmed in Sun Valley, Idaho in 2018 and performed on first leg of the 2020 tour. A grand finale, \u201cPerfect Life,\u201d will feature 40 current and past IDI company and board members, along with student skaters all performing together even while far apart across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope this special event brings the work of IDI to so many people who didn\u2019t have the opportunity to see us on the road this year,\u201d says IDI Executive Director Doug Webster. \u201cThis is an experience of real beauty and joy during a very difficult time. And while the event is free, the funds we raise during the show will get us back to the cities we planned to visit last spring.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photo by
