{"id":35946,"date":"2024-08-09T20:29:12","date_gmt":"2024-08-10T00:29:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/?p=35946"},"modified":"2026-04-06T15:34:44","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T19:34:44","slug":"recap-2024-lake-placid-idi-senior","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/recap-2024-lake-placid-idi-senior\/","title":{"rendered":"Recap: 2024 Lake Placid IDI (Senior)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>by Anne Calder<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Senior LPIDI medalists were: Marie-Jade Lauriault &amp; Romain Le Gac (CAN) (gold), Oona Brown &amp; Gage Brown (USA) (silver), Eva Pate &amp; Logan Bye (USA) (bronze).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Marie-Jade Lauriault &amp; Romain Le Gac (CAN) (191.19) were very happy to present their program. Unfortunately for two months the team was unable to do any lifts due to Romain\u2019s back injury. Six weeks ago they were able to add them into the routine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Lauriault thought it reflected the training they had done the past six weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The Canadians chose the Spaghetti Western theme after listening to a lot of music, including country. They had seen some western exhibitions at competitions and both loved the atmosphere of the music. They selected\u00a0\u201cMan With a Harmonica\u201d by Ennio Morricone, \u201cLone Rider\u201d and \u201cFor the Love of God\u201d (Spaghetti Western soundtrack) by Stephan Sechi, Hollywood Film Music Orchestra and \u201cDevil Got You Beat\u201d by Blues Saracen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201cWe wanted something that was different but at the same time had a connection. We wanted to modernize it,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>so that\u2019s why I\u2019m wearing pants instead of a little skirt,\u201d smiled Lauriault. \u201cWe have such a great team [at I.AM] so the program will grow throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Oona Brown &amp; Gage Brown (USA) (186.01) split their time between Long Island, NY and Montreal, Canada with I.AM. Gage spoke about the advantage to training at the two sites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt\u2019s good to train with other teams. Competitions aren\u2019t that stressful. There are over 20 teams there, so there\u2019s no lack of motivation in Montreal. On Long Island there\u2019s motivation to keep everything fresh and all that, but it\u2019s definitely different when we\u2019re the only dance team as opposed to one of many.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The siblings were very happy with the performance.\u201dThis program is a lot more high energy, upbeat than last season\u2019s,\u201d said Gage. \u201cWe\u2019ve loved \u201cBaba O\u201dRiley\u201d for a long time. We grew up with our parents listening to that old music. Romain Haguenauer at I.AM and our Long Island coaches, Joel Dear and Inese Bucevica choreographed it. We all had a pretty equal input into this Free Dance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The team shared its thoughts on their James Brown Rhythm Dance. \u201cThat one is very fun! Last night\u2019s performance we felt good. All the songs we pick, we know the song. We love the song. We\u2019ve play the song already. We love James Brown,\u201d said Gage. \u201cI grew up in a musical family, so my brothers would cover old songs like that, and we\u2019d play together. James Brown fits perfectly with our style. His last name is a cherry on the top. Three Browns at one time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The team&#8217;s free dance is &#8220;Baba O\u2019Riley&#8221; by The Who.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-e5dd5b1d wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Pate-Bye1790-2024-1024x606.jpg ,https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Pate-Bye1790-2024.jpg 780w, https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Pate-Bye1790-2024.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 150px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Pate-Bye1790-2024.jpg?resize=1080%2C639&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"uag-image-35947\" width=\"1080\" height=\"639\" title=\"Pate-Bye1790-2024\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"img\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><br>Eva Pate &amp; Logan Bye (USA) (184.00) were not sure they would be in Lake Placid. \u201cI had a cyst in my throat<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>and had surgery in March and was off ice for a month, then we got married in May and were off again for another two weeks. It was really kind of challenging. We had no idea what [music] to do. We were going back and forth, then this idea popped up, and we went rolling with it. We\u2019re behind by about six weeks where we want to be. It was our goal to make it to Lake Placid and to compete. I\u2019m so happy we made that goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Bye added that It\u2019s nice to get out for the first time. That was our main goal to show what we\u2019ve got so far and keep the [Pasquale and Igor choreographed] program going.&nbsp;Some people weren\u2019t sure about the theme because Charlie Chaplin can be considered more theatrical and more of a silly character. It can be hard to portray him in different ways that the audience and judges can appreciate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt was a challenge we both wanted to take on,\u201d Bye explained. \u201cSomething we\u2019ve tried to portray obviously in this program is more of the romance side of things &#8211; a little bit more of our story together. We just got married this year and how we bring that in is quite an adventure for both of us. It\u2019s very exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Overall, Pate &amp; Bye think both of their programs have a lot of room to grow and are excited to see where they go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Leah Neset &amp; Artem Markelov (USA) (183.75) train in Colorado Springs with Elena Dostatni. They are the reigning U.S. national junior champions &#8211; the first team in any discipline to win three straight U.S. junior national titles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Neset spoke about their Free Dance. \u201cIt\u2019s been a challenge getting this program together. We put in some difficult things, so I\u2019m proud of what we showed today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Nikolai Morozov choreographed the program in May. There have been some small changes, but nothing significant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Markelov added that it was definitely an experience returning to Lake Placid this season as seniors after winning the 2024 World Junior Championship. \u201cWe came to show what we\u2019re working on this season. We were able to accomplish that. We are proud of that. It\u2019s been an interesting experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Neset &amp; Markelov were the 2023 gold medalists as juniors at the Lake Placid Ice Dance International. Their free dance music includes \u201cMy Love Will Never Die\u201d by AG and Claire Wyndham and \u201cHold Your Breath\u201d by Astyria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Isabella Flores &amp; Ivan Desyatov (USA) (176.45) said that their performance was what they wanted because it was how they had been practicing it at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been focusing on our skating skills this year and also pushing them together. It\u2019s something that\u2019s helped our skating,&#8221; Flores said. &#8220;When we began looking for the music for this season we knew that Kaitlyn Weaver was probably going to choreograph the free dance. We were looking for something contemporary. We had some ideas, but we asked her&nbsp;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>for a recommendation. She suggested the music from the award winning movie, <i>Poor Things. <\/i>We listened to the soundtrack and loved it. We started coming up with ideas. It was a really fun program to create. Our footwork has changed, but the majority of the choreography is still Kaitlyn Weaver\u2019s. We\u2019ve done a lot of touchups.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i> <\/i> The team skated first in the rhythm dance, so they watched the remaining 21 teams perform. They were happy with their skate except disappointed that the lift just wasn\u2019t as spectacular as in practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-2c89a552 wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/1033-Fabbri-Ayer-1024x606.jpg ,https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/1033-Fabbri-Ayer.jpg 780w, https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/1033-Fabbri-Ayer.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 150px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/1033-Fabbri-Ayer.jpg?resize=1080%2C639&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"uag-image-35948\" width=\"1080\" height=\"639\" title=\"1033-Fabbri-Ayer\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"img\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><br>Alicia Fabbri &amp; Paul Ayer (CAN) (176.20) chose their favorite songs for the free and rhythm dance programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI\u2019ve been wanting to skate to \u201cIt\u2019s a Man\u2019s World\u201d since we partnered in 2018,\u201d Fabbri recalled. \u201cWe found a new version that we really like. It\u2019s a little more modern that fits with our skating pretty well. We mixed it with another song.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe reached out to Zachary Donohue to make the choreography,\u201d Fabbri continued. \u201cWe made it from zoom actually. He\u2019s in Australia and couldn\u2019t come to Montreal. He was in his living room at 2:00 am for the whole thing because of the time difference. We were on the ice taking videos and sending them to him. [He was never on the ice at all]. We were very confident with him not being on the ice. He did our short program AC\/DC last season. This program took only &#8211; two weeks &#8211; an hour a day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>He was amazing.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ayer explained the process. \u201cWe had used the off season to create the elements to showcase our strengths,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>then came to him for choreo. We showed him the elements; he helped us tweak them and then put them together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe\u2019d obviously never done that before,\u201d Fabbri added. \u201cWe have so many amazing choreographers at I.AM, but we had such a fun time doing the rhythm dance last year, so why not try it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">A<\/span>s for this year\u2019s Rhythm Dance, another song we wanted to use since we started skating together, is Elvis Presley\u2019s \u201cJailhouse Rock\u201d, Ayer said. \u201cYesterday we did [a medley] and felt extremely locked in.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As for the costumes for their Free Dance at the Lake Placid Ice Dance International, Fabbri &amp; Ayer were told at the last minute they would not be ready for the competition.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThere are a lot of amazing girls where we train in Montreal,\u201d Fabbri said \u201cThe rhythm dance costume belongs to Laurance Fournier Beaudry and this free dance dress was Kaitlin Hawayek\u2019s from the 2022 Olympic Free Dance. Paul\u2019s is from a short program a long time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">In addition to <\/span>\u201cThis is a Man\u2019s World\u201d, other free dance music selections are \u201cYou Don\u2019t Own Me\u201d by Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Black Canary, and Brenna Whitaker.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Nadia Bashynska &amp; Peter Beaumont (CAN) (170.10)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>who train with Carol Lane and Juris Razguliaevs in Toronto, Canada, partnered in 2017. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; Their free dance music is <\/span>\u201cThe Bass\u201d (Cache) by Watazu, Rhumba Rhythm Only (Instrumental) by Walter Laird &amp; Nico Gomez, \u201cCall Me Manny\u201d from <i>Babylon <\/i>by Justin Hurwitz.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis was only our second time getting out with the program, and we\u2019ve done only a few run-throughs,\u201d&nbsp; Bashynska said. \u201cWe got out there and did our best. It was generally clean. The scores have improved since the last competitions. We\u2019re generally satisfied and know what to work on next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe liked the concept of the music we got from watching the movie, <i>Babylon, <\/i>Beaumont said.<i> &#8220;<\/i>As soon as we heard the pieces of music even before choreographing it, we were dancing in the changing room, so it really connected with us. It\u2019s a change of a program. It\u2019s a completely different genre for us. We never experienced a program that was intense, really in a fun way. With this one, we feel we\u2019ve captured that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe stepped out of every possible comfort zone for us,\u201d Bashynska added. \u201cIt was insane, crazy, creepy, We kind of wanted to do that, but never got to do it in our career together. We were<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>looking for<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp; <\/span>something just funky and definitely unseen for us as a team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe know it\u2019s not getting the best reviews, but it\u2019s so different from what we\u2019ve done before, and we\u2019re just fresh for senior, so we\u2019d love to explore every possible genre,\u201d Bashynska noted. \u201cI knew right away when I was listening to the music, I wanted to do something so weird, out of the box and so extra.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe really love the Rhythm Dance music to \u201cLady Marmalade\u201d by Labelle and \u201cLe Freak\u201d by Chic,\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>Beaumont said. \u201cIt\u2019s sassy and has character &#8211; same as the Free Dance in a different way, more of a downside.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe love our short,\u201d added Bashynska. \u201cI will say that the costume\u2019s leopard shirt was definitely Peter\u2019s idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Annabelle Morozov &amp; Jeffrey Chen (USA) (163.74) are a new team that trains at MIDA in Canton, Michigan. Charlie&nbsp;White contacted Nikolai Morozov about a tryout with Jeffrey Chen. According to Annabelle, \u201cIt was magic on the ice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Her immediate reaction was, \u201cI\u2019m skating with Jeffrey Chen for the USA.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Nikolai Morozov and Charlie White created the <i>Star Wars <\/i>program. Jeffrey Chen\u2019s mother made Annabelle\u2019s costume.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe have such a great team at MIDA who are so helpful,\u201dsaid Morozov. \u201cI\u2019m so grateful to be skating with Jeffrey and working with them.\u201d Her new partner responded. \u201cIt\u2019s great to have someone who shows up every day. It\u2019s nice to have someone to lean on as well when I need it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI was born, grew up here and skated in the U.S. when I was little,&#8221; Morozov said. &#8220;I skated in the juvenile and intermediate levels. I definitely forgot a little bit what it\u2019s like, but it still feels like home to me. [She competed in the U.S. from 2012-2016 and is the 2014 U.S. Juvenile silver medalist].<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Coach Charlie White spoke about the new team. \u201cI think the sky\u2019s the limit with these two. They\u2019ve been together for a&nbsp;very short amount of time, and I like the material, but it has a lot of room to grow. How exciting it is to feel there\u2019s space to&nbsp;improve, and how much that will contribute to obviously some immediate success, but also long term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-8e322a84 wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/0109-Larson-Kapran-1024x606.jpg ,https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/0109-Larson-Kapran.jpg 780w, https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/0109-Larson-Kapran.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 150px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/0109-Larson-Kapran.jpg?resize=1080%2C639&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"uag-image-35950\" width=\"1080\" height=\"639\" title=\"0109-Larson-Kapran\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"img\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\"><br \/>Larson &amp; Kaplan (UKR) (162.97) are in the third year of their partnership. The team trains in Estero, Florida with Marina Zoueva\u2019s team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cOur program is only a couple of months old, so over all it was good,&#8221; Kaplan said. <br \/><br \/>\u201cWe\u2019re excited to have such a strong start,\u201d Larson added. \u201cWe definitely see room for improvement. After this competition we know the ways to improve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The rhythm dance music is \u201cRich Man Frug\u201d from <i>Sweet Charity.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>\u201c<\/i>We wanted to find something a little different from last year and something we can have a lot of fun with,\u201d explained Larson. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of inspiration to take from the\u00a0choreography and dance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Their free dance is to music from the <i>Love Story<\/i> soundtrack by Francis Lei.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mariia Nosovitsky &amp; Michael Nosovitsky (ISR) (150.54) are twins who were born in the Ukraine, skate for Israel, and train with Galit Chait Moracci in Hackensack, NJ.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mariia knew the music she wanted for their free dance this season (Exogenesis Symphony Pt.3 (Redemption) by Muse). She just forgot the name of the piece, so she went to Youtube and found it. She knew she wanted that music for sure.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Everyone on the team agreed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cLast year we had something usual,\u201d Mariia said. \u201cThis season we wanted to try something new and special for more\u00a0skating skills. So we tried this to see how it works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThere was no question.
