Recently at the Lake Placid Ice Dance International, IDC spoke with Shira Ichilov & Mikhail Nosovitskiy, a new ice dance duo representing Israel. The team trains in Montclair, New Jersey, with Galit Chait. Ichilov has had several previous partners; Nosovitskiy only competed with his twin sister.<\/p>\n

Ichilov was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, and recently turned 23. Nosovitskiy was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, and is also 23.<\/p>\n

When Mariia Nosovitskiy retired and returned to her home in Kyiv, Ukraine, Mikhail began a partner search. At the time Ichilov was in a different partnership. However, the Nosovitskiys and Ichilov had trained together with the same coach in New Jersey for seven years. The new partnership was inevitable.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had different partners; Misha had his sister, but we worked the same,” Ichilov said. “We grew up together.”<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce we skated together, we knew it was going to work. The coaches also realized this was the right decision.\u00a0 <\/span>I think it\u2019s the best thing that could have happened to both of us.”<\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cThe last three months that we\u2019ve been skating together, I have never enjoyed skating as much as I\u2019ve done during this time. We\u2019re still in the honeymoon phase, but we\u2019re going to enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nosovitskiy noted the difference in his reaction after his first tryouts in February and March, which was \u201cMaybe!\u201d After skating with Ichilov, it was, \u201cLet\u2019s do it\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cShira is an experienced skater and knows what she needs to do,\u201d Nosovitskiy said. \u201cI know what I need to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI like that Misha is a hard worker,\u201d Ichilov added. \u201cHe comes to the rink and treats it like it\u2019s a job. No matter how we feel, we go on the ice and just get the job done. Even the days we don\u2019t feel like it, we understand the only way for us to succeed is to stay on the ice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur coach understands us so good,\u201d Ichilov explained. \u201cWe don\u2019t even have to tell her how we feel or what we need, she just knows. I think it\u2019s hard to find a coach that understands you. People switch coaches a lot, but I\u2019ve been with Galit ten years now without being with anyone else. She just reads my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

The team goal for the season is to do as many competitions as it can and to show their improvement.<\/p>\n

\u201cLake Placid is already our third competition,\u201d Ichilov said. \u201cWe skated at the Chesapeake Open and the Dallas Classic. We still need to get to know each other. It\u2019s still very fresh, to know and reach our limit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOn one side, we\u2019re both very experienced. We skated many years, so it\u2019s not new for us,\u201d Nosovitskiy pointed out. \u201cOn the other hand, we\u2019re still new, so competition, competition, competition as much as we can.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most important thing is to keep working and to keep improving like we are,\u201d Ichilov said.<\/p>\n

The team discussed their Free Dance music: Exogenesis: Symphony, Part 3: Redemption by Muse.<\/p>\n

Last season Igor Shpilband choreographed Mariia & Mikhail Nosovitskiy\u2019s Free Dance to the same music.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe took the program and made it our own,\u201d Ichilov said. \u201cPasquale Camerlengo changed it, so It\u2019s very different than it was. The music is the same; the steps are the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s different. You\u2019re going to feel it,\u201d Nosovitskiy said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re trying to tell our story in the Free Dance – even the words are about starting it over again\u201d Ichilov said. \u201cWe feel the music was meant for our situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLet’s start over again<\/p>\n

Why can’t we start it over again<\/p>\n

Just let us start it over again<\/p>\n

And we’ll be good<\/p>\n

This time we’ll get it, we’ll get it right<\/p>\n
