Rebecka & Filip are the 2026 Swedish junior bronze medalists.

Tell us about your individual skating journeys, including any early special memories.

Rebecka: I started skating when I was six years old. After two years I had my first competition. I remember it very clearly. I was very nervous but I loved to do my pretty hair, and have my beautiful dress on! Since then I’ve competed every year. This kept up until I became 18. This is when I decided to stop singles skating.

Three weeks after stopping, I got the chance to try skating with Filip and it reignited my love for the sport. I had never seen or heard anything about ice dance before this. Now we’ve done one season together and I’ve never improved so much during a season before.

Filip: My skating journey is a bit different from most others. I started hockey practice when i was three. I joined my brothers training passes when our dad was our coach. My brother would have his normal practice and I would be next to the barrier with a cone in hand to skate circles around them haha.

After stopping hockey when I was 12 I didn’t touch a pair of skates or the ice rink for five years. When I was 17, I watched some old Olympic footage of German pair skaters and Yuzuru [Hanyu] that I got the idea to try it out. I mailed the nearby club to try it out and fell in love instantly. Ever since I’ve been in an ice rink six times a week for four years. I distinctly remember having my first competition in Finland as a solo ice dancer. It was horrible. I felt so out of place and I told my coach that I won’t compete alone again, but I think this experience made me resolve to get better, to not stand out even greater.

What drew you to ice dance?

Rebecka: From the start, it was very spontaneous that I started with ice dance. I thought it would be a new challenge to try and it stuck.

Filip: I on the other hand got forced into ice dance by my first coach. She told me that me being a boy in Sweden that wants to train in figure skating makes me obligated to do ice dance.

Tell us how your partnership started.

Rebecka: It was very spontaneous and random on my part. When I stopped singles skating the plan was to stop skating and competing, but when I got asked to try ice dance I didn’t see a reason to not try it out.

I found the tryout weird haha. The steps didn’t make sense and I’d never watched anything about it. But I did find it very fun! It was good company!

Filip: I was excited on my part. I had tried out about four partners before this but none of them stuck, but this time it was a really good. Singles skating experience with the same enthusiasm and nice personality that ticked all the boxes. She picked up on it really quickly and even though she was confused by the pattern dances she could use her experience to make the skating more unison.

What’s something that surprised you about your partner when you first started training together?

Rebecka: I found it very surprising that Filip started skating when he was only 17!

Filip: I found it surprising how she was so quick to decide to start taking it seriously, and a few weeks after starting she took a flight to another country with a boy she didn’t know quite well for a two week camp. I saw myself in that competitive spontaneity just like when I started skating as a 17 year old.

What experiences do each of you bring to the partnership?

Rebecka: I bring my experience from singles skating. I’ve competed since I was a kid both nationally and internationally. I have tips and tricks regarding how to handle stressful situations. And I’ve trained for a long time under many different coaches which gives me the tools to tackle almost all exercises and training styles.

Filip: Me on the other hand had more experience when it came to ice dance. Even if it was only a few years. I had most of the basics down and only a few bad habits.

I’ve been very interested in training my whole life so helping Rebecka with exercises for pain, strength or stretching.

What has been the biggest adjustment for each of you so far in the partnership?

Rebecka: Being able to talk during practice and have a say in my training with both my coach and partner. Another really nice benefit is that with everything I do, I’m not alone. There is always someone there with me.

Filip: I had to move cities to find Rebecka. Living alone has come with a few downsides but getting the chance to skate with her means it is all worth it.

What is it that you already like most about dancing with your new partner?

Rebecka: You have very fun during practice and outside practice! I also find it very engaging how fast we are improving!

Filip: I also find off and on ice practices very fun! We have a lot of laugh filled hours during our weeks of training. I also enjoy Rebecka’s easy goingness, she is always in a good mood and doesn’t get worked up easily!

Tell us about your training center. What does a typical training day look like for you?

We are located in Stockholm. Our coaches are Karin Eliasson Skarstedt and Malin Malmberg and with help sometimes from Aliki Stergiadu.

A normal training of multiple ice passes ranging from 1-2 ½ hours each. We also have one session per week of dance. In those dance classes we go through styles of dancing: Rumba, Chacha, Waltz and so on! We usually do lifts 15 min before ice starts to get warmed up and to work on technique.

Tell us about your programs last season. Who/what inspired your music choices and overall themes?

Rebecka: We only got to decide one of our programs. Our coach decided the Free dance to speed up the process so we could practice them before our first competition. For our rhythm dance we really liked the theme “Rebellion and freedom”. This is because we both agreed that the 90s was a time of standing up to social norms and widening acceptance. With that we chose “Crucified” by Army of Lovers and “It’s My Life” by Dr. Alban.

Filip: After a whole season Rebecka wanted to rip my head off, because she hated the beginning of Crucified after months of morning practices with it screaming in our ears.

For our Free dance Karin decided on a more romantic theme. With a Bruno Mars trilogy of “Talking to the Moon”, “Die with a Smile”, and “Runaway Baby”.

Tell us about your competitions last season.

Last season our first competition was Tallinn and we had a blast seeing all the couples in real life. Our competitors really gave us a first hand view on what ice dance really is! We brought with us a lot of experience from this competition which helped us a ton moving forward. We had a total of four competitions before becoming seniors.

What have been some of the biggest lessons you learned from competing last season?

Filip: I think that our biggest lesson this season is that everything we do needs to be in unison not only on the ice. We need to be connected and stay as a team in everything we do. If we accomplish something it’s our accomplishment, if someone is injured, we are injured and so on.

Rebecka: I agree with Filip unison. Another lesson i think is important is facial expressions during lessons and competition. I think it brings so much to the program and gets you in the mood while practicing it!

Who choreographed your programs? Did someone else arrange your music? If so, please share those experiences.

Last season we got help from our coaches to build our programs. We decided together with them on which music and style we wanted. Karin arranged the free dance music and Filip mixed the rhythm dance. This season we took help from a choreographer named Albin Boudrée. It was quite whimsical and a lot of “learn by doing” last season but we think in the long run it was a good experience.

If you could have a lesson with any ice dancer past/present, who would it be? Why?

Rebecka: I would love to have a lesson with Lilah Fear, and Lewis Gibson. I really liked their program at the Olympic Games! Love the energy and vibe they give off!

Filip: We sometimes have Aliki Stergiadu as a trainer during some camps, and with that I wonder. How would her partner coach us. Would he be the same? More strict, or laidback?

I really want to have Juris Razguliaiev for a practice session sometime!

What is each of you looking forward to most this skating season? What will be your biggest challenge(s)?

Rebecka: I’m looking forward to get our new programs! I’m also really excited to travel to new countries and get a taste for their ice rinks and how the sport is represented in their country. What I think our biggest challenge this season is going up to senior, without that much experience. We’ve only done one season before this, and we weren’t very prepared for it. I’m eager to see how this season with proper preparation is going to help our competitive season.

Filip: I’m really excited to compete with our new programs! To get the chance to show us for real with proper preparation and one year of experience together. What I see as our biggest challenge will be to get more cohesion in our partnership and improve the general relationship between us.

What’s one word that best describes your partnership?

Spontaneous

Please share anything you would like our readers to know about you as a team.

“Don’t take everything so serious, it’s not that deep.” Rebecka – 2026

Follow Rebecka and Filip’s ice dance journey via their team Instagram account @Team_rebecka.filip.

For the next entry in our New Team Series, we meet Rebecka Gamstedt & Filip Nilsson, senior ice dancers from Sweden.
