{"id":9549,"date":"2016-09-21T02:16:19","date_gmt":"2016-09-21T02:16:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/?p=9549"},"modified":"2019-03-23T19:20:59","modified_gmt":"2019-03-23T23:20:59","slug":"2016-nebelhorn-trophy-preview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/2016-nebelhorn-trophy-preview\/","title":{"rendered":"2016 Nebelhorn Trophy Preview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">10 teams representing eight countries head to Obertsdorf, Germany, for Nebelhorn Trophy, the third event on the 2016-17 ISU Challenger Series.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Held annually since 1969, Nebelhorn Trophy has twice been used (2009 &amp; 2013) as the final qualifying opportunity for the Winter Olympics as well as a testing ground for the International Skating Union to trial changes to the judging system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Americans Madison Chock &amp; Evan Bates have previously won this event twice and are the defending champions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Nebelhorn Trophy marks the season\u2019s debut for Chock &amp; Bates.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This season, their short dance to Mark Ronson\u2019s \u201cUptown Funk\u201d and \u201cBad to the Bone\u201d by George Thorogood was choreographed by Rohene Ward, while they turned to 1984 Olympic Champion Christopher Dean, for their free dance to \u201cUnder Pressure\u201d by Queen and David Bowie.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Both programs are a departure from themes the team have previously presented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">2014 World Champions Anna Cappellini &amp; Luca Lanotte were originally on the roster for Lombardia Trophy, but will instead start their season in Obertsdorf.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Italians have finished just off the podium at the last two World Championships. For their short dance, they\u2019ll present \u201cCry for Me\u201d for their Midnight Blues segments and \u201cChoo Choo Boogie\u201d for the accompanying rhythm (Boogie Woogie).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their free dance features music by Charlie Chaplin including \u201cLimelight\u201d and the Overture from <em>City Lights<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Piper Gilles &amp; Paul Poirier of Canada are entering their sixth season as a team and will be in the medal mix at Nebelhorn.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They finished eighth at the World Championships, but their innovative short dance set to Beatles music earned them fifth place in that phase.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In addition, their short dance was one of two selected to be turned into a pattern dance by the ISU.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their 2016-17 short dance utilizes \u201cOh What a Night for Dancing\u201d by Barry White and Vance Wilson (Blues) and \u201cDisco Inferno\u201d by Leroy Green and Ron Kersey (Disco) while their free dance is a tango set to \u201cCon buena onda\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Germany\u2019s Kavita Lorenz &amp; Joti Polizoakis finished above expectations at each event they faced last season, including qualifying for the free dance at the World Championships.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Although they briefly ended their partnership, the duo have re-teamed and will start their season in Obertsdorf, where they debuted as a team in 2015.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their short dance is to \u201cCome Together\u201d and \u201cBlack or White\u201d by Michael Jackson and they are one of a few teams that selected Hip Hop to accompany the blues rhythm.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their free dance is to a medley of Spanish selections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In July, Elliana Pogrebinsky &amp; Alex Benoit of the United States won the Lake Placid Ice Dance International, their first senior event.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Although the two-time U.S. junior bronze medalists had one more year of junior eligibility, they chose the challenge of stepping up to the senior level.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Their short dance music is \u201cTrouble\u201d by Elvis Presley while their free dance presents the Persian legend of Layla and Majnun set to Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s \u201cSadko\u201d and \u201cThe Feeling Begins\u201d by Peter Gabriel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Korea\u2019s Yura Min &amp; Alexander Gamelin are one of two teams at Nebelhorn who are competing in back-to-back events after finishing sixth at the U.S. International Figure Skating Classic last week in Utah.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>After setting a new personal best in the short dance last week, Min &amp; Gamelin will look to improve upon last week\u2019s performances. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Lorenza Alessandrini &amp; Pierre Souquet (France), Viktoria Kavaliova &amp; Yurii Bieliaiev (Belarus), Katharina M\u00fcller &amp; Tim Dieck (Germany), Ekaterina Fedyushchenko &amp; Lucas Kitteridge (Great Britain) will also compete.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>10 teams
