{"id":9557,"date":"2016-09-21T02:37:34","date_gmt":"2016-09-21T02:37:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/?p=9557"},"modified":"2019-03-23T18:35:05","modified_gmt":"2019-03-23T22:35:05","slug":"2016-cow-tales-blog-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ice-dance.com\/site\/2016-cow-tales-blog-1\/","title":{"rendered":"2016 Cow Tales Blog #1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section admin_label=&#8221;section&#8221;][et_pb_row admin_label=&#8221;row&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Greetings from Oberstdorf, Germany and the 2016 Nebelhorn Trophy, which is the third event in the ISU Challenger Series.\u00a0 This is Elliana Pogrebinsky and Alex Benoit and we are thrilled to be blogging once again for <a href=\"http:\/\/ice-dance.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/ice-dance.com&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1474510642530000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGTv7NuHinQzpaUWpMa857ZKJethQ\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ice-dance.com<\/a>!\u00a0 As you may recall from our previous blogs, since we write as a team and don&#8217;t want to confuse our readers, we refer to ourselves as &#8220;we,&#8221; &#8220;Ellie&#8221; or &#8220;Alex.&#8221;\u00a0 We also work from a theme for the week to tie our blogs together and hopefully provide some local flavor for the readers, but we had some difficulty in choosing just one for Oberstdorf.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Simply because in the skating world, Oberstdorf has a very deep history with a global reach, but the village is also known for its famous cows.\u00a0 Faced with the decision between skating history and Bavarian bovines, we opted for a Cow Tales theme, but don&#8217;t worry, we will also include some interesting skating facts too!<\/p>\n<p>We started our Oberstdorf experience <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_526386201\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Monday<\/span><\/span> evening at DTW.\u00a0 We flew with 3 of the Detroit-based dance teams that will be competing at Nebelhorn, and arrived <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_526386202\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Tuesday<\/span><\/span> morning in Munich.\u00a0 The city&#8217;s Oktoberfest celebration started on Saturday, and the airport was filled with dirndl-clad women and men dressed in lederhosen, presumably arriving to enjoy the party.\u00a0\u00a0 After a 3 hour bus ride through gorgeous countryside, we arrived in Oberstdorf in the Allgau region of the Bavarian Alps.\u00a0 Surrounded by higher mountain meadows and lush lower pastures dotted with dairy cows, the village is primarily closed to cars and buses, meaning that we will walk to the rink each day.<\/p>\n<p>We checked in to the Hotel Mohren, (which ironically is the same hotel that Alex&#8217;s mom was housed in as a Team USA ice dancer at the 1981 Nebelhorn Trophy), walked to the Eissportzentrum (rink) to register, and found our first cow!\u00a0 Okay &#8212; it was actually a statue\u2026 but we were happy nonetheless for the photo op!\u00a0 Alex savored some awesome-tasting, locally-produced ice cream on the way back to the hotel, before we headed to our Team USA dinner.<\/p>\n<p>The dinner was organized by Team Leader Lorrie Parker, known for her unbelievable cache of patriotic goodies, and she did not disappoint with her table d\u00e9cor!\u00a0 We had a great Italian dinner and shared some laughs and camaraderie, before heading back to the Hotel Mohren for the night.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve been told that the church bells peal at <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_526386204\"><span class=\"aQJ\">7am<\/span><\/span> and that the cows leave the village for the lower pastures a little earlier than that.\u00a0 Hopefully we will still be sleeping at that time <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_526386205\"><span class=\"aQJ\">tomorrow<\/span><\/span>, but our intention is to experience this sight later in our trip.\u00a0 In the meantime, we will drift off <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_526386206\"><span class=\"aQJ\">tonight<\/span><\/span>, dreaming of the iconic dances that were skated by teams that made Oberstdorf their home\u2026..the Duchesnays&#8217;
